Recording Keyboards, Mics, and Guitars into Sony ACID

A lot of people have asked me how to record keyboards and other instruments/devices into ACID. This is my official response. Summary: An explanation as to which cables you need in order to record sound from an external device (keyboard, rack, turntable, mic, etc.) into Sony ACID (or any other software multitrack) and how to connect these cables to your computer’s stock sound card. If you are not using a stock soundcard, ie the sound card that your computer came with, this video may not help you. This video should apply to virtually all PC stock sound cards and external devices such as turntables, microphones (dynamic or condenser), keyboards/racks (including the roland phantom, korg triton and oasis, yamaha motif, sr-3, etc), guitar amplifiers, vcr’s, televisions, dvd players, and basically anything else that outputs sound.

Playing and Recording a Guitar using Ubuntu 10.04

If you are a guitar or bass player and want to use your Ubuntu system to practice or record, this is how you can do it. This video uses Rakarrack (for effects processing), Audacity (to record), and Jack Control (to wire up the inputs and outputs) in Ubuntu. This video is keeping the theme of “no terminal” usage of Ubuntu; however, when I installed jack control it did make me paste 2 commands into the terminal. They might not have been required as they were used to provide faster real time recording, but installing jack control is a small bit more complicated then just clicking install :-( .

Audio-Technica AT-LP120-USB turntable

Live the dream for less coin: a visual clone of the legendary Technics SL1200 series, at 1/3rd of the cost. This Audio-Technica is a heavyweight DJ-grade direct drive turntable with 78 RPM speed, quartz lock pitch control, fully adjustable S-shaped tonearm, and built-in pre-amp and USB output. It only comes with an entry level cartridge, but it tracks well and has crystal clear highs, better than anything I’ve had before. An upgraded cartridge will really make it sing, and I look forward to playing vintage 78s as well. The previous AT-PL120 model is the same thing except without the built-in USB output (which I don’t plan on using anyway).
